Songs of Liberation

Ruti Halvani and her traditional folk ensemble invite you into a world where song and dance exist as one. Their unique vision of Jewish music through the ages draws on vibrant traditions from across the Jewish world, with music from Medieval Spain, the Balkans and the Middle East, all fused together by the age old beat of the drum.

Their repertoire spans continents and centuries reflecting the diverse cultures of an ancient, wandering people, united in songs of suffering and celebration. Pieces in Yiddish and Ladino, inspiring tango and klezmer dancing, accompany traditional Hebrew melodies and modern Israeli songs ? showing the journey of the language of the bible, now the language of the modern Jewish state.

Vocalist Ruti Halvani brings the riches of her classical background and her powerful mezzo-soprano voice to the ensemble, as well as infusing a strong Israeli flavour into the music. She is accompanied by Stuart Hall on Ud and Guitar, while Guy Schalom provides the roll of the drum.

Principally a Jazz musician Stuart Hall heads the Jazz BA at Middlesex University and has performed with artists such as Steve Arguelles, Django Bates, Lol Coxhill, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Hermeto Pascoal. Playing a variety of string instruments, he also works in Early Music and has featured on film scores including Star Wars Episode 1, The Mummy Returns, The Shipping News and Caravaggio.

Versatile percussionist Guy Schalom is equally at home driving a Big Band as he is improvising a solo in his own duo Schalom-Bakhshayesh. Guy appears with many UK Jewish music ensembles and has taught at Klezfest London. He also runs his own record label specialising in Jewish and acoustic world music.
